AREA Grant, Small Business, Program Project, and Glue Grant Applicants

AREA Grant, Small Business, Program Project, and Glue Grant Applicants

PA-01-071 specifically refers to the regular R01 grant mechanism and alludes briefly to the P01 and R24 grant mechanisms (see below). However, applicants interested in the Metals in Medicine subject area may wish to use other grant mechanisms, and such applications would be welcomed by NIGMS. Other institutes participating in PA-01-071 may or may not be interested in applications using the following mechanisms.

For example, the Academic Research Enhancement Award (R15) mechanism may be a suitable mechanism for researchers at AREA-eligible institutions.
For details on this mechanism, see http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/area.htm.

Small businesses have been very active in the Metals in Medicine area and may wish to apply for the Small Business Innovation Research (R43, R44) or Small Business Technology Transfer (R41, R42) grant award mechanisms.
For details on these mechanisms, see http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/sbir.htm.

Researchers may also wish to make use of the NIGMS Exploratory Studies for High Risk/High Impact Research (R21) grant mechanism.
For details, see http://www.nigms.nih.gov/funding/grntmech.html#explor

Researchers seeking new funding to support group activity toward a common goal may wish to consider the program project (P01) grant mechanism.
For details of NIGMS support, see http://www.nigms.nih.gov/funding/grntmech.html#b

Researchers who are already funded for work on a problem of mutual interest and are seeking additional funds to support collaborative efforts may wish to consider the NIGMS Integrative and Collaborative Approaches to Research Awards (R24), also known as the "glue grant" mechanisms.
For details, see http://www.nigms.nih.gov/funding/gluegrants.html.
