MBRS Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence (RISE) Program Supplemental Instructions for Form PHS 2590

(For Non-competing Continuation Grant Applications)

Progress reports to continue support of a Public Health Service (PHS) grant must be submitted to NIGMS two months before the beginning date of the next budget period using PHS 2590 (rev. 9/2004; forms and instructions are available at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/forms.htm). In addition to the PHS 2590 instructions follow the guidelines suggested here to prepare the progress report. All progress reports must be submitted to the centralized mailing address:

Division of Extramural Activities Support, OER
National Institutes of Health
6705 Rockledge Drive, Room 2207, MSC 7987
Bethesda, MD 208927987 (for regular or US Postal Service Express mail)

Bethesda , MD 20817 (for other courier/express mail delivery only)

Phone Number: (301) 594-6584

Submit the completed, signed original progress report and one copy (with required signatures).

Note that this is a change in business process. Progress reports should no longer be submitted directly to the NIH awarding component.

Grantees access a website to determine which progress reports are due. The Office of Policy for Extramural Research Administration, OER, National Institutes of Health (NIH) hosts the website located at http://era.nih.gov/userreports/pr_due.cfm. Grantees are responsible for periodically checking the list, which is updated on/around the 30 th of each month. In addition to this website, e-mail reminders are sent to the PI.

For grantee institutions and PIs registered in the eRA Commons, the progress report due information is available in the Commons Status system. Commons-registered institutions and PIs also have access to pre-populated face pages for the 2590 Progress Report via Status. For more information on the Commons, see: http://commons.era.nih.gov/commons/index.jsp.

For additional information review the instructions of PHS Form 2590 at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/forms.htm.

Specific Instructions for preparing RISE grant Progress Report:

SNAP Instructions for Submitting the Progress Report

Complete Face Page (Form Page 1) except for items 8a and 8b, the Progress Report Summary (Form Page 5) and the Key Personnel Report (Form Page 7). Complete the Checklist Page (form Page 6) only if there is a change in performance site(s) that will affect the facilities and administrative costs and/or if program income is anticipated. If program income is anticipated the Checklist should reflect the amount and source(s). The Progress Report should begin on Form Page 5.

The Progress Report should summarize the progress achieved in the reporting period with respect to the RISE Program goals. The narrative part is limited to three pages, and numerical and other data may be presented in tabular form (see sample format tables included at http://www.nigms.nih.gov/funding/rise_progress_reports.html to report data; tables and figures are not counted in the three-page limit). The report should include:

  • A brief description of each of the student development/intervention activities implemented, the number of students participating, their academic status (freshman, etc), the faculty member introducing/conducting the activity.
  • Brief account of results of process and outcome evaluation of the implemented student development activities and how evaluation results are being used to improve the program.
  • Data on RISE student retention, graduation, and information on their application and admission to research degree programs.
  • List the names of the undergraduate and graduate students (if any) supported by the RISE grant, their degree status, scholastic achievements and the total number of months/years supported by the end of the reporting period.
  • List the research publications co-authored by students and acknowledging MBRS-RISE support and give the number of scientific presentations. Describe other scholastic achievements of RISE participants such as fellowships, awards, etc. Compare the performance of RISE students relative to other students with respect to retention, graduation and matriculation to the next academic step.

Appendix: Limit the appendix to reprints of published papers and preprints of papers in press resulting from and acknowledging MBRS-RISE support, and full evaluation reports.
