RESEARCH FUNDING

Collaborative Research
|
 |

Overview
NIGMS provides funding to promote integrative and collaborative approaches to research that are increasingly needed to solve complex problems in biomedical science. Information about Collaborative Project Grants and Glue Grants can be found below.
- Collaborative Project Grants
See program announcement PA-03-127, "Integrative and Collaborative Approaches to Research," published May 23, 2003 (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-03-127.html).
The purpose of this initiative is to provide groups of currently funded investigators with additional support for collaborative and integrative activities. These activities should significantly enhance the investigators' existing capabilities and introduce new approaches to the research aims of the funded projects. Applications must be for projects in areas of research supported by NIGMS, and the principal investigator who serves as the consortium leader must have an NIGMS-funded R01 or R37 grant.
This PA is intended to support collaborative activities and resources, involving funded investigators working on a common problem. The maximum direct costs per year will be $300,000. The PA is an ongoing announcement for which there is no set-aside of funds.
Additional information for applicants, including frequently asked questions and lists of currently funded programs, can be found on the Collaborative Project Grants page.
Inquiries are welcome, and should be directed to the contact people listed in the PA.
- Glue Grants
Purpose: The purpose of this initiative is to make resources available for currently funded scientists to form research teams to tackle complex problems that are of central importance to biomedical science and to the mission of NIGMS, but that are beyond the means of any one research group. A high level of resources may be requested to allow participating investigators to form a consortium to address the research problem in a comprehensive and highly integrated fashion.
New Applications: NIGMS reannounced the large-scale collaborative awards (glue grants) program in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts in July 2004 (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-04-128.html) on a schedule to have the first Phase I applications be due on September 20, 2004, and potential funding of subsequent Phase II awards be in September 2005. The initiative was reannounced as a program announcement instead of a request for applications, which will run for 3 consecutive years with annual receipt dates. NIGMS does not plan a set-aside of funds for this program, and awards will be dependent on availability of funds. NIGMS does not anticipate making more than one new glue grant (Phase II award) per year.
Renewals: See request for applications RFA-GM-04-001, "Large-Scale Collaborative Project Award Renewals," published December 17, 2003 (http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-GM-04-001.html).
Additional information for applicants, including frequently asked questions and lists of currently funded programs, can be found on the Glue Grants page.
